The risk of illness from sun exposure increases even in the spring months. Those who spend a lot of time outdoors at work must therefore protect themselves from the health effects. Employers are responsible for this. PPE-approved UV protective clothing and safety goggles offer excellent protection and are often subsidized by employers’ liability insurance associations.

Gefahren durch UV-Strahlung

UV radiation consists of various components, the most well-known of which are UV-A and UV-B radiation. Both can pose various health risks:

UV-B-Strahlung

UV-B-Strahlung ist intensiver als UVA-Strahlung und ist die Hauptursache für Sonnenbrand. Die Gefahren von UV-B-Strahlung umfassen:

Sonnenbrand: UV-B-Strahlen können Sonnenbrand verursachen, der sich durch gerötete, schmerzende Haut äußert und langfristige Schäden verursachen kann.

UV-A radiation

UVA radiation penetrates the skin more deeply than UVB radiation and is present year-round, even on cloudy days. The dangers of UVA radiation include:

Skin aging: UV-A rays can cause premature skin aging, including wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and pigmentation disorders.
Skin cancer: UV-A rays play a role in the development of skin cancer, especially melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer.
Immune system suppression: UV-A radiation weakens the skin’s immune system, which can lead to increased susceptibility to infections and impaired wound healing.

Both UV-A and UV-B rays increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Since its inclusion in the list of occupational diseases in 2015, non-melanoma skin cancer has been the most frequently reported occupational disease in the construction industry. In 2019, 3,131 new suspected cases were reported to BG BAU. Therefore, it is important to protect employees through technical and/or personal protective measures.

Employers are required to conduct a risk assessment. This can be used to determine appropriate protective measures for activities in the sun. Below are some recommendations for consideration:

Identify exposure: Determine who is exposed to UV rays and to what extent. Consider outdoor workplaces, activities in the sun, and other potential sources of UV radiation. Consider the length of stay, time of day, and season.

Es ist wichtig, dass Unternehmen geeignete Maßnahmen ergreifen, um ihre Mitarbeiter und andere betroffene Personen vor den Gefahren der UV-Strahlung zu schützen. Review protective measures: Determine whether protective measures are already in place, such as the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE), the use of shaded areas, or the application of sunscreen. Assess the effectiveness of these measures.

According to the TOP principle, technical and organizational measures also take priority over personal protective equipment against UV rays in the area of UV protection. Depending on the level of exposure, a combination of all protective measures is required.

Arbeitskleidung, PSA und Hautschutz zum Schutz gegen UV-Strahlen

Personal protective equipment (PPE) against UV radiation can include various components, depending on the specific situation and level of exposure. A combination of these protective measures provides the best protection against the harmful effects of UV radiation:

UV-Arbeitsschutzkleidung:

Dazu gehören im Idealfall langärmelige Hemden, langärmlige Jacken und Hosen, die aus speziellen Stoffen mit hohem UV-Schutzfaktor (UPF) hergestellt sind. Solche Kleidungsstücke bedecken einen Großteil der Haut und bieten einen physikalischen Schutz vor UV-Strahlen. Geeignete Schutzkleidung gegen UV-Strahlen sollte mindestens der Norm EN 13758 entsprechen.

Sonnenhut oder Sonnenkappe:

Ein Hut mit breiter Krempe oder eine Kappe mit Nackenschutz bietet Schatten für das Gesicht, den Nacken und die Kopfhaut und schützt diese Bereiche vor UV-Strahlen.

Sonnenbrille:

Sunglasses with UV protection filters protect the eyes from the harmful effects of UV radiation and can help prevent eye damage such as conjunctivitis and cataracts.

PSA-geprüfte Arbeitskleidung von iQ-UV
